That book was followed by Sometimes a Great Notion and several works of nonfiction that detailed Kesey's transformation from novelist to guru of the hippie generation. They could have named one of the big-guns like Bill, Laura, Kara, or Gaius, and that would have been a cheap "shock reveal." (They already did this with Tigh and Tyrol.) No matter who the 5th cylon was people were going to be disappointed and bitch so it didn't really matter to me that is was Ellen.That's true.Īfter all of the build-up, anyone that they announced as being the final Cylon would be a let-down.

Of course, this is all just my own speculation but I'd be entirely satisfied if the series ended up resolving things this way. If the theme of these last episodes is about 'identity' and figuring out who we are, then it makes sense to make us viewers questions that as well by telling us 'WE' are the cylons. It could also mean that what they took as a Biblical prophecy was actually just a historical document of Cylon history that through being translated over the years evolved into something slightly different (much as people speculate happened to the Old Testament) That would explain why they used zodiac signs and call things the same words and even speak the same as we do on present day earth.
That makes the humans of BSG actually 'aliens' that grew out of present day Earth's culture transplanted to a distant string of habitable planets and bastardized/adapted into something completely new and yet somehow quite similar. But not before we sent forth the 12 Cylons who went off to recreate a new life in a different part of the universe and eventually settled onto planets that became Caprica, Tauron, etc.

This is purely speculation but what what I took from this episode is that the cylons are actually 'us', modern day humanity.Īt some distant point in our future we have evolved into Cylon skin jobs and kill ourselves off during a nuclear war. I was more excited by all the things that seem to be clicking into place in terms of bringing the series to a close and answering all of our questions. I'm kind of glad that Starbuck doesn't end up being it because it just never seemed right for her to be one since she was so strong early in the series at the great anti-hero Cylon slayer. I thought this was a fine episode and having Ellen as the final Cylon seems fine to me.
